Judy Bedell says, “Six pulls of one wool strip and I was instantly hooked – head over heels – on the art of primitive rug hooking”. Inspired (and taught) by artists Donna Sproule (Perth, ON) and Deanne Fitzpatrick (Amherst, NS), and driven by the need to feel connected to generations past, Judy gleefully leapt into creating her own colourful, practical, resource-friendly primitive mats. Telling new stories through found cloth, Judy has taught the art of primitive hooking privately, and has participated in several Studio Tours and Fibre Art Exhibitions in Eastern Ontario. Besides managing a career in aging-related education and social services, Judy runs a small business in textile productions, is a founding member of the Parsimonious Sisters (a primitive rug-hooking group), and is a member of the Ontario Rug Hooking Guild. Judy Bedell : Un seul essai a suffit afin que Judy succombe à cette forme d’art. Inspirée (et enseignée) par Donna Sproule et Deanne Fitzpatrick et motivée par le désir d’établir un lien avec les générations antérieures, Judy s’est adonné à la fabrication de tapis colorés, pratiques et écologiques avec beaucoup de joie. Racontant de nouvelles histoires grâce à des morceaux de tissus trouvés, Judy a donné des cours privés en fabrication de tapis à points noués, a participé à plusieurs tournées d’ateliers, ainsi que l’Art Exhibitions dans l’Est ontarien. À part sa carrière en éducation reliée au vieillissement et les services sociaux, Judy gère une petite entreprise où elle produit du textile, est une membre fondatrice des Parsimonious Sisters et est membre du Ontario Rug Hooking Guild.

Donna Sproule finds the deepest satisfaction and joy in rug hooking where utility and beauty so happily coexist. Her style is bold and sweeping with swirling forms opposed to predictable imagery and muted colours of some traditional rug hooking. For the past five years, Donna’s work has hung in the River Guild Gallery in Perth, has been featured in travelling exhibitions, museums, competitions, and galleries across Canada. She teaches in community and college venues, is featured in newspapers, and runs a small business in textile productions as well as rug-hooking workshop retreats. Donna Sproule trouve une grande satisfaction et joie dans fabrication de tapis où se combinent fonctionnalité et beauté. Son style est grandiose : elle oppose des formes en spirale avec des images et couleurs connues, issues des tapis traditionnels. Pour les cinq dernières années, les œuvres de Donna ont été exposées à la galerie River Guild à Perth et ont aussi été inclues dans des expositions itinérantes, des musées, des concours et des galeries à travers le Canada. Elle a enseigné au sein de la communauté et des institutions scolaires, a été le sujet d’articles de journaux et gère une petite entreprise où elle produit du textile et organise des ateliers de fabrication de tapis. Donna est une des membres fondatrices des Parsimonious Sisters, groupe dédié à la fabrication de tapis à points noués.
